Women's Basketball | March 30
DeKALB, IL - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team set a new program-high with nine selections to the Academic All-MAC Team, as announced by the Mid-American Conference on Thursday.
"To have nine student-athletes earn Academic All-MAC honors is a huge accomplishment," said head coach
Lisa Carlsen. "The work they put in on the practice floor is equaled by their efforts in the classroom. Our student-athletes strive for excellence in all facets of life, and their academic achievement is something we take an immense source of pride in."
NIU had eight Academic All-MAC honorees in 2018 and 2020. Three Huskies earned their third Academic All-MAC selections.
A'Jah Davis (DeKalb, Ill./Montverde Academy [Fla.]),
Chelby Koker (Racine, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) and
Janae Poisson (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) all added an Academic All-MAC honor to their postseason accolades from the conference. Davis was named to the All-MAC First Team for the second straight season. Koker was picked to the All-MAC Second Team for the second time in three seasons. Poisson was named the MAC Sixth Player of the Year for the second time in her career.
Grace Hunter (Monroeville, Ind./Bellmont),
Jayden Marable (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook),
Sidney McCrea (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Prairie),
Emily Meinert (Galesburg, Ill./Parkland College) and
Brooke Stonebraker (Versailles, Ohio/Versailles) each earned their second Academic All-MAC selections. Sophomore
Laura Nickel (Marshall, Wis./Marshall) was selected for the first time.
Davis, Koker, Marable and Nickel were all named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team in February.
This is the sixth straight season NIU has had at least six student-athletes named to the Academic All-MAC team. The Huskies tied Western Michigan with nine Academic All-MAC honorees, tied for the most in the conference. To qualify for the Academic All-MAC Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests scheduled or completed.
