SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Following a weekend off, the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team returned to action with a pair of runner-up finishes this weekend at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational.
Sadiya Shamsid-Deen (McDonough, Ga./Sprayberry) took second in the open 400 meters while
Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was second in the high jump.
"We struggled a little bit with confidence in some events and in other events we excelled," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Every athlete has to trust their training and work for the results they are ready to achieve. Their practices are showing great progress so the staff knows they are ready. Belief is key and intimidation in others can happen in this sport. We have a young team, so we know it's coming and when it does look out!"
Raes led three Huskies in the top-five in the high jump as she cleared the bar at 1.76 meters (5-09.25), the top mark in the Mid-American Conference this season.
Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and
Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) tied for fifth, clearing 1.66 meters (5-05.25).
Shamsid-Deen was second in the open 400-meter dash, running 56.51 seconds, the 12th-fastest time in the conference this year.
Roshell Rowe (Manchester, N.J./Manchester) was third, running 56.89 seconds. Ball State's Emma Potter won the open 400 in 55.64.
Rowe also earned a top-10 finish in the 200 meter dash, running a personal best time of 25.27 seconds.
In the triple jump,
Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) earned a third-place finish with a best mark of 12.13 meters (39-09.75). Umukoro's top mark, which came on her fifth attempt of the competition, is also the fifth-best mark in the conference this season.
Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) also recorded a top-five placing as she took fourth in the open high jump competition, clearing the bar at 1.56 meters (5-01.25).
NIU also sent a small contingent of athletes to the Walter Cramer Invitational at Olivet Nazarene.
Faith Rouse (Milwaukee, Wis./King) ran a personal best time of 27.07 seconds to finish third in the 200-meter dash at that event.
NIU will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 8, when the Huskies compete in the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa.
