Akiva McBirney-Griffin Signs with NIU

DEKALB, Ill. – Northern Illinois University men's basketball head coach Matt Majkrzak announced the addition of Akiva McBirney-Griffin (Hamilton, New Zealand/St. John's College, Hamilton) to the Huskie roster for the 2026-27 season. McBirney-Griffin is the 15th player to join NIU for the upcoming season.

"Akiva comes to us from a UC Irvine program that led the nation in defense efficiency during the 2025-26 season," said Majkrzak. "He's started 24 games for the Anteaters over the past couple of seasons and has been an anchor for that elite defense. At 6-foot-9, 225 pounds, he possesses great size to compliment his athleticism, but what really stands out is his intelligence and understanding of the game. On offense, he moves fluidly and will fit in perfectly with our high-paced system. We are so excited to have Akiva be a Huskie."

McBirney-Griffin appeared in 63 games during his time at UC Irvine, making 24 starts. This past season, he played in 34 contests, which included 16 starts, scoring a career-best 12 points against Cal Poly on March 5. McBirney-Griffin helped the Anteaters win 23 games during the 2025-26 season, including the Big West regular season championship and an appearance in the NIT. In addition to his collegiate experience, McBirney-Griffin has played for the New Zealand U15, U17 and U19 national teams.
