Agents
An individual shall not agree (orally or in writing) to be represented by a professional sports agent for the purpose of marketing athletics ability or reputation in a sport to secure an opportunity as a professional athlete. Accordingly, the Huskie Athletic Compliance Office (HACO) utilizes an agent registration process and educational materials to avoid such agreements from compromising an individual's eligibility.
In men's basketball, any individual who solicits a prospective or enrolled student-athlete to enter into an agency contract or attempts to obtain employment for an individual with a professional sports team or organization or as a professional athlete must be certified and maintain active certification per the policies and procedures of the NCAA agent certification program.
Any agent wishing to contact a current student-athlete is required to complete and submit the Agent Registration Form to the HACO. Once received, the HACO will verify the individual is registered in the state of Illinois as an agent and an email will be sent to the individual notifying them of the approval or denial to contact current student-athletes. The email also includes NCAA rules and regulations, as well as other HACO policies to be aware of. If an agent attempts contact with a current student-athlete prior to registering through the HACO, an email will be sent to the individual informing them of our process in order to have any further contact with student-athletes.
As stated in the materials provided to registered agents, any correspondence an agent wishes to provide to a student-athlete must be vetted through the HACO. Once reviewed, the HACO will then provide the correspondence to the student-athlete after receiving the head coach's approval (each head coach is responsible for deciding when their student-athletes are permitted to receive correspondence from agents). Documents accompanying agent correspondence to student-athletes include an Agents FAQ, Top Ten Reminders, and Profesional Sports Players Associations.
Student-athletes are reminded at the beginning and end of each year during educational meetings about NCAA rules pertaining to agents and the HACO's policies and procedures.
