Edner's Unbeaten Weekend Highlights NIU Effort, But Buffalo Prevails

April 15, 2006

EDNER'S UNBEATEN WEEKEND HIGHLIGHTS NIU EFFORT, BUT BUFFALO WOMEN PREVAIL IN MAC MATCH DeKalb, IL -- Northern Illinois University freshman Jenny Edner clearly had a stellar weekend, unfortunately it wasn't enough to help get the Huskies into the win column as a team as the University at Buffalo became the latest Mid-American Conference women's squad to post a win over the still short-handed NIU crew on Saturday (April 15).

With Northern Illinois still forced to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match as well as two singles points, UB's Bulls snared the necessary split in doubles for a quick 3-0 lead and then captured three more singles matches to produce a 6-1 victory. The triumph gives Buffalo a four-match win streak at 12-4 overall and 4-2 in MAC play while the Huskies' losing streak now reaches 10 straight with a 4-16 overall record and 0-6 loop standard. Despite missing Lilian Asuaje (Monterrey, Mexico / American School Foundation of Monterrey) and Nao Umemura (Kasugai-shi Aichi, Japan / Kardina International) who normally fill the Nos. 3 and 4 singles positions, NIU came close to breaking into the win column on Friday with a 4-3 loss to the University of Akron.

Just as she did in that match, Edner registered victories for the Huskies at the top of the singles line-up and also at No. 1 doubles with teammate Dora Delgadillo (San Luis, Potosi, Mexico / Instituto Technologico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey). On Saturday against UB, Edner and Delgadillo teamed up for an 8-2 triumph and then Edner accounted for Northern Illinois' only point as she posted a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Buffalo's Andreea Novaceanu.

"That was a real quality win over a tough opponent," NIU coach Pontus Hiort said. "Jenny was very consistent and made very few mistakes. She was able to put enough pressure on her opponent to force some mistakes and then capitalize on them. She had a game plan and stuck to it.

"Overall, I thought we played pretty well in doubles, especially in the No. 1 match. We competed well against a UB team that's definitely a little stronger," Hiort added.

NIU's No. 2 tandem of Megan Brooks (Aurora, IL / West) and Chrissy Nagel (Millstadt, IL / Belleville West) came up short in an 8-5 battle with UT"s Miglena Nenov and Kristen Ortman. The Rockets were able to post two-set victories in the Nos. 2 through 4 slots to go with the Huskie forfeits at Nos. 5 and 6.

Northern Illinois closes out the regular-season schedule with one last Mid-Am road trip as NIU vists Bowling Green State University for a 12 p.m. Friday (April 21) match followed by a 12 p.m. Saturday (April 22) visit to Western Michigan University.
