PHILADELPHIA - Ebony Ellis posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, as the Northern Illinois women's basketball team's three-game winning streak came to an end at Temple, 79-56, Tuesday.
Northern Illinois (3-2) fought with the Owls, who have made seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments, for much of the game. The Huskies went on a 9-0 run toward the end of the second half the cut what had been a 13 points to just three with 2:18 left. Temple answered with a 5-1 spurt to close the period, and went into halftime with a 40-33 lead.
"I liked what I saw in the middle of the game," NIU head coach Kathi Bennett said. "But you have to be ready, you have to have energy to start, you have to be locked in, you have to be focused (from tip-off)."
The Huskies shot a scorching 52.2 percent (12-23) in the first half, but Temple committed only three first-half turnovers, while NIU had 10 that resulted in 16 Owl points.
"Offensively, we have to adjust," Bennett said. "Defensively, that's got to be consistent, that's got to be who we are."
Temple shot 57.7 percent (15-26) in the second half, while limiting NIU to 22.7 percent (5-22) shooting, to pull away. The Huskies went without a field goal for 14:52 in the second half, a drought that saw NIU go from down eight to down 23.
Marke Freeman led NIU with 21 points on 6-of-13 shooting. The versatile guard added four rebounds and three assists, while hitting 7-of-8 free throw attempts.
"She continues to make strides," Bennett said of Freeman. "She's really working to get better."
Freshman Danielle Pulliam scored a career-high seven points and added six boards and two assists. Pulliam's classmate Ashley Sneed matched her career-best output with six points.
Of Ellis' rebounds, six came on the offensive glass, a fact that impressed Bennett.
"Ebony is one of the best rebounders I've ever coached," she said. "She just goes after it."
Temple was led by Shey Peddy, who hit 10-of-16 shots for 23 points and added four steals. BJ Williams contributed 13 points off the bench, adding to Temple's 29-15 advantage in bench scoring.
The Huskies open their home schedule, Nov. 27 at 3 p.m., when Northern Illinois hosts Chicago State at the NIU Convocation Center.
