VICTORIA, Texas - The Northern Illinois women's golf team carded the fifth-best round three score of any team at the Claud Jacobs Invitational, helping the Huskies to a one-spot improvement at Victoria Country Club, Monday.
The Huskies shot a 317, improving their score from day two by 11 strokes, to finish in 11th place at the 16-team tournament. Senior Kim Hunley (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) led Northern Illinois with a three-round score of 235 to finish in a tie for 16th place. Hunley highlighted her tournament with a 77 in the second round.
"It's become a trend with us playing at these warm weather tournaments that the longer we stay, the better we get," Tyska said. "I was very impressed with our ability to lower our score in the third round."
The Huskies were one of only five teams to shoot their best round on day two.
Northern Illinois' low-round came from Michelle Caporusso (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect), who made a 13-stroke improvement from her opening score to card a final round of 75. Caporusso tied for 51st with a three-round tally of 245.
Texas State shot a tournament-low 300 to win by three strokes over Oklahoma. Akron's Kristen Hall took first, shooting a six-over 223 over 54 holes.
Northern Illinois' Kim Bailey (Gibson City, Ill./Gibson City) and Allie Parthie (Marinetta, Wis./Marinetta) both shot their best rounds of the tournament in the final round. Bailey carded an 80 and finished tied for 62nd with a 251. Parthie completed her day with an 82 to finish in a tie for 64th. Kelsie Passolt (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) rounded out NIU's top five with a 54-hole count of 253, highlighted by a second-round 82.
Playing as an individual, Jessica Parmenter (Peoria, Ill./Peoria Christian) fired an 80 in her final round. Parmenter and fellow Huskie Mandi Vavrinchik (Elmhurst, Ill./York) were limited to playing two of three rounds as they recover from injury. Parmenter shot a two-round 161, and Vavrinchik carded a 170.
"As this spring season goes on, I'm seeing us become a very deep golf team," Tyska said of Parmenter and Vavrinkchik's return from injury.
The Huskies take four weeks to train before returning to action at the Loyola Invitational, April 11-12 in Evanston, Ill.
