DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team wraps up the fall portion of its schedule when it travels to Buies Creek, N.C. for the 2015 Fighting Camel Classic at the Keith Hills Golf Club on Sunday.
The lone school from the Mid-American Conference competing in the event, NIU will be a part of a 15-team field consisting of host Campbell, Eastern Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, High Point, Marshall, Mercer, UNC Greensboro, Northern Arizona, Nova Southeastern, Old Dominion, Radford, Stetson, and Western Carolina.
“The only team we’ve seen this year is Eastern Kentucky,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “There are a handful of teams there that we haven’t seen, which is good. Campbell, the host school is top 60 in the country rankings-wise, and there are a couple other schools up there in the rankings as well. It’s going to be good to see tough competition and hopefully perform well and bring a trophy back home.”
Not only will this be the first tournament this season the Huskies will compete in without facing a school from the MAC, it provides the NIU women’s golfers with a chance to compete on a different type of course.
“It’s going to be a different course, different layout,” Kester said. “It’s going to be a different type of grass. We’ll get down there early, get some practice in and get ready for the three-day event.”
The Huskies enter Sunday’s action looking to improve on a sixth-place showing at The Fall Preview last weekend. NIU posted a 915 (304-305-306), led by Lena Gautier (Le Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil). The Huskie junior carded a 224 to finish in fifth place. She posted first and third round 74s, while scoring a second round 76.
The Huskies will play 18 holes on each day from Sunday, Oct. 18-Tuesday 20 with a tee times starting at 7:30 a.m. CT. There will live scoring three-hole scoring via golfstat.com.
