BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team finished in second place at the Redbird Invitational Monday at Weibring Golf Club.

NIU posted a final round 300 to finish with a 913, eight shots behind winner and Mid-American Conference foes Bowling Green, which won the event with a 905. Evansville's Kayla Katterhenry was the medalist after scoring a 220.

"It's definitely great to bring some hardware home," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "It's a good tournament to see what we need to start working on a little bit more than we have been. Obviously you want to win, but at least we got something out of it."

Sophomore Hayley Mortensen and junior Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud, France/Creteil) led the way for NIU. Mortensen, the most consistent Huskie on the weekend, finished the tournament with a career-low 227, which ranks 10th on NIU's all-time record for a 54-whole event. She posted rounds of 75, 76 and 76.

"You can definitely tell she worked extremely hard over the summer," Kester said of Mortensen's play. "She came out firing for this event. We look for her to continue that strong play this weekend."

Gautier, who was in 12th when her final round began, cracked the top 10 with a final round 76. She finished the event carding a 228. Senior Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) made the biggest jump up the leaderboard, climbing 23 spots to finish in 17th. Ellett, who started the day in 40th, shot a final round 73 to finish with a 231.

Freshman Kelly Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) moved 11 spots up the leaderboard after shooting a final round 75. Anderson finished with a 232 (80-77-75) in her first collegiate action. Junior Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) finished in 48th with a 239 (77-80-82) and rounds out the Huskie scoring competitors.

Freshman Brielle Ward (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland), who is playing as an individual, moved six spots up the leaderboard after shooting a final round 76. She finished in 17th after scoring a three-round total of 231 in her first collegiate event.

The Huskies return to action Saturday when NIU travels to Iowa City, Iowa for the Diane Thomason Invitational.
