CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference's leading rebounder Ally Lehman (Nineveh, Ind./Indian Creek) was named to the All-MAC Third Team Monday afternoon, earmarking a record-breaking season for the junior. The honor is the first of the junior's career, marking third-straight season a Huskie has been honored on the All-MAC team.
Lehman averaged a double-double during the season, recording 13.4 points and a MAC-best 11.0 boards per game. The Nineveh, Ind., native also finished fifth in the conference in assists, averaging 4.5 helpers per game. The junior scored the most points in a conference game this season on Feb. 24 when she tied the NIU single game record with 41 points.
"We've depended on Ally a lot in every aspect of the game this season and it's great for her to be recognized by the conference for her complete body of work," said Head Coach Lisa Carlsen.
In 29 games this season, Lehman has carried the load for NIU, leading the team in points, rebounds and assists. She's led the Huskies on the glass in 27-of-29 games this season and pulled down or more rebounds a program record 20 times in 2015-16. She is four rebounds shy of breaking the NIU single season record of 322 rebounds by Tammy Hinchee in 1989-90.
She became the eighth player in program history to reach the 20-rebound plateau in a game on Dec. 30 at Chicago State, pulling down 21 boards while adding 11 points and a season-high nine assists.
Lehman recorded 14 double-doubles in 2015-16, tied for the fourth-most by a Huskie in a season. She is one of two guards in the country to average more than 11.0 rebounds per game this season and is second behind All-America candidate Brittany Martin of Oklahoma State.
As the team's top distributor, Lehman has dished five-or-more assists 14 times this season and averaged 4.7 helpers in 18 Mid-American Conference games. With 131 assists this season, she is the first Huskie since Stephanie Raymond in 2006-07 to register back-to-back seasons with 100-or-more assists.
The junior became one of 18 players in program history to record 600 rebounds in a career and also joined a list of 18 players to dish 250 assists at NIU. However, with 319 assists and 664 rebounds, Lehman is the only player in NIU history in the 600 rebound and 300 assist club. Lehman enters today's game with 844 points in her career.
Northern Illinois University will open the Mid-American Conference Tournament this evening in Kalamazoo, Mich., taking on Western Michigan.
The Huskies defeated the Broncos on Feb. 24 in Kalamazoo, 80-70, and closed the regular season versus WMU Saturday with a 64-60 loss. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. Central on ESPN3.
