NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The Northern Illinois University women's golf team finished in sixth after posting a 297 in the final round of the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships at Purgatory Golf Club Sunday.

The Huskies finished the tournament with a 905, 40 strokes better than the school record for a MAC Championships set in 2014. The 297 was the lowest round by a Huskie team in a MAC Championships and ranks seventh all-time in school history. NIU tallied 12 birdies on the day and 53 pars.

"It was a good day for the ladies today," NIU head coach Kim Kester said. "It was hard to overcome our first round, but the girls rebounded well with great second and third rounds. Overall it was a good tournament for us."

Freshman Kelly Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) led the way for NIU. She shot a three-under par 70 in the final round, a school record for a MAC Championships. That 70 allowed her to move nine spots up the leaderboard on the final day of play. Anderson finished in 12th after scoring a 221, also a school best in the league's championship tournament. She had four birdies on the day, all coming on the back nine.

Fellow freshman Brielle Ward (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) rebounded from a tough first round 83 in her first MAC Championships. She shot a final round par 73 after shooting a one over in the second round. Brielle's 230 helped her move up six spots on Sunday as she finished in 32.

"Kelly did a fantastic job today and stayed patient," Kester said. "Brielle hung in nicely in this event despite being injured."

Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud) was plus-four on the day, carding a final round 76. Five bogeys and a double bogey on 16 proved too much to overcome for the Huskie junior. Gautier finished in 24th with a 227, a personal best for her in a MAC Championships. For the second-straight year, Gautier picked up second-team All-MAC honors.

Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) scored a final round 79 to finish in 33rd. Her three-round score of 231 was a season low for the Huskie junior. Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) finished her Huskie career with a final round 78. Ellett moved up two spots, finishing in 41st with a 237.

"Connie finished out her career very nicely," she said. "I know she was disappointed with her first two rounds, but one event doesn't define her college career. She has had a great career as a Huskie and she should be very proud."

Kent State used a second-round 285 to move into the team lead. The Golden Flashes have a two-day total of 579. NIU tied for sixth with Akron and was ahead of Bowling Green, which finished in eighth with a 213. Akron's Danielle Nicholson won the individual title with a 211.
