BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's golf team sits in first place after firing a 597 on the first day at the 2016 Redbird Invitational at Weibring Golf Club Sunday.

The Huskies, which shot an opening round 296 and a second round score of 301, lead the 14-team field, along with Boston College. The Eagles also posted a 597 (306-291) on the first day of play.

"Overall, it was a good start to the year," said NIU head coach
Kim Kester. "Brielle was under par in the first round and Kelly even in the second."

NIU sophomores
Kelly Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and
Brielle Ward (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) finished the first day in the top-10. Anderson sits in fourth after shooting a 146 (74-72), while Ward is tied for seventh with a 148. Ward started out strong, shooting one under par in the first, however, she was plus-five in the second round.

NIU newcomer Andréa Agniel (Lyon, France/Lycee Frederic Fays) shot a four over 76 in her first look at the course and a 75 in her second round. She is in 16th with a 151.
Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud) is right behind her fellow countrywoman after scoring a 152 (75-77). She is tied with four other golfers in 21st.

"Andréa managed her way around the course nicely with a lot of great up and downs," Kester said. "Lena closed out her second round with a birdie and Sydney bounced back on her second 18."

Senior
Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary's) is in 52nd place after shooting a 159 (81-78) and rounds out the team scores.

Lexi Salberg (Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) provided the big highlight for NIU on the day. The Huskie junior hit a hole in one on a par four in the first round of play. Salberg is in 63rd with a 161 (81-80).
