The award goes to student athletes who have accumulated a grade point average of 3.200 or higher, competed in more than half of the season's competitions and finished at least two semesters at the school. Freshman and junior transfers are not eligible for the award.
This year's honorees from NIU include seniors

Carter proved her athletic ability and smarts as she earned five weekly awards and two season awards already. She earned three NIU Scholar Athlete of the Week awards, two Specialist of the Week awards, Specialist of the year and All-MAC Second Team honors. Her senior season also led to a school record and her name in the record book five times. Her career high 9.950 matched the 20-year school record on uneven parallel bars.
Martucci and Prentice also won weekly awards throughout the season. Martucci was named the NIU Scholar Athlete of the Week award twice, while Prentice earned the same award once, MAC Gymnast of the Week once and improved her career highs in every event.
Crumley, Gilliam and Wenzel all set career highs with Crumley's on beam, Gilliam's on vault and Wenzel recorded her floor career high. Greenfield finished the season with a high 9.800 on beam.
