Women's Golf | September 18
YORKTOWN, Ind.— After coming off an opening tournament win last week at the Redbird Invitational, the Northern Illinois University women's golf team was back in action Monday at Player's Club Golf Course at the Cardinal Classic. The Huskies are currently in eighth place after shooting rounds of 300 and 298 in the first 36 holes.
The Huskies are four shots from seventh place and NIU Coach
Kim Kester was not happy about the way her team played Monday.
"We did not have a good day," Kester said. "We got off to a very slow start and we dug ourselves in a hole. We had too many big numbers."
The Huskies' individual leader is freshman
Sofia Gomez Enriquez Riart (Asunción, Paraguay/ Montverde Academy) who posted a score of 75 in the first 18 and one-under par 71 on the second 18 to finish the day at two over par 146. She is currently tied for 16th place.
After shooting an even par 72 in the morning round, junior
Kelly Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./ Wheaton Warrenville South) carded a five-over par 77 in the afternoon and is tied for 26
th at five-over par 149. Sophomore
Isabella Samudio (Bogotá, Colombia/ Colegio Helvatia de Bogotá) shot 77-74 and is tied for 38
th.
Both junior
Brielle Ward (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) and freshman
Lauren Ingle (Rochester Hills, Mich/Rochester Hills Stoney Creek) finished Monday tied for 54
th with a score of 10 over par 154.
Kester is looking for the Huskies to improve on their performance in the final round on Tuesday.
"We need to stay away from big numbers and make birdies [tomorrow]," said Kester. "The course was set up and we did not take advantage of it. We need to start off strong make a lot of birdies and move up the leaderboard."
The 54-hole Cardinal Classic concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes set to tee off at 9:00 am. Follow live scoring at GolfStat.com.
