Women's Track and Field | March 24
ARLINGTON, Texas – Northern Illinois University track & field freshman
Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) tied the long jump school record of 5.84 meters (19' 2.00") in her first collegiate outdoor competition as the Huskies competed at the UT Arlington Bobby Lane Invitational on Saturday.
"Today was a good day of competition," said NIU Director of Track & Field
Connie Teaberry. "We had a couple of automatic MAC qualifiers, personal records and a school record tied. The warm weather definitely aided in their efforts. The outdoor-only events that we have yet to practice outside were hit or miss, but the ability to execute the full technique will help those athletes down the road. This meet is definitely one the team will return to. We got a lot of quality performances and the competition was well run."
Sophomore
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) began the season with a Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles as she came in second with a time of 13.97 seconds.
Many freshmen got started on setting their personal best times to work towards beating in the future, while senior
Doshawn Franks (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) beat her previous career-best 400-meter dash time in 55.87 seconds to finish fourth.
Though the timing is a little different from indoor season to outdoor season due to the sizes of the tracks, freshman
Courtney Sockwell (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) did break her 200-meter time, crossing the finish line in 24.90 seconds.
On top of these Huskies' success, there were four top-three finishes from NIU. Freshman
Nora Finegan (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) took second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.86 minutes, Amarteifio took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.63, and sophomore
Mercer Mack (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) took third in her first 3,000-meter steeplechase of her career, finishing in 12:17.45 minutes. The 4x100-meter relay squad, consisting of Amarteifio as well as freshmen
Khenadi Jones (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City West),
Syanne Johnston (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) and Sockwell, crossed the finish line in third as they recorded a time of 46.45 seconds.
