IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team earned five event victories in cold conditions at Iowa's Musco Twilight on Saturday evening. Junior
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) was part of two first-place finishes, taking top honors in the 100-meter hurdles while being part of the winning 4x100-meter relay.
"Under brisk conditions our athletes competed well," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Times and marks were not what we were looking for, but the focus and efforts were on point. This competition tested the maturity of the team and their willingness to fight regardless of the weather.
"We got needed races, throws and jumps in, as repetition equals perfection. The times and marks don't show it, but the athletes made several needed corrections technically. We walk away with several victories and everyone healthy, which means we had a successful meet."
Amarteifio took the top spot in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.80 seconds, comfortably ahead of second-place Patrice Watson of Northern Iowa (14.05).
In the 4x100-meter relay, Amarteifio helped the Huskies to another event victory, teaming with junior
Britney Hew (Hanover, Jamaica/Holmwood Tech),
Syanne Johnston (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) and sophomore
Courtney Sockwell (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) for a winning time of 47.04 seconds, topping second-place Northern Iowa by just under a half-second (47.52).
Freshman
Taylor Ramsey (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central) was victorious in the high jump, clearing 1.70m (5-07.00) on her first attempt at the height. Dallyssa Huggins, an unattached competitor, also cleared the 1.70m height, but did so on her second try, giving Ramsey the win after both failed to clear 1.73m.
Other event winners for the Huskies were sophomore
Nora Finegan (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) in the 600 meters (1:36.66) and sophomore
Meagan Biddle (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) in the unseeded section of the 800-meter run (2:18.79).
Along with the event wins, NIU posted a pair of second-place finishes. Freshman
Jazmyn Smith (Pinecrest, Fla./Gulliver Prep) took the second spot in the long jump, measuring 5.56m (18-03.00) on her first attempt of the day. Smith was only edged by Western Illinois' Bo Brasseur, who measured 5.64m with her third leap of the competition.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the quartet of Hew, junior
Grace Harris (Dousman, Wis.), junior
NeShay Curtis (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South Berkeley) and Finegan finished second with a time of 3:56.29, behind Northern Iowa (3:52.58).
NIU will return to action next week when it splits the team up to attend a trio of events as Huskie will compete at the Brian Clay Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays and the Michael Johnson Invitational.
