MADISON, WI – Sophomore
Tommy Dunsire (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) of the Northern Illinois University men's golf team recorded his first career top-10 finish on Tuesday as the Huskies wrapped up play at the Badger Invitational, hosted by Wisconsin at University Ridge.
"I was proud of the way the guys battled," said head coach
John Carlson after his first tournament leading the Huskies. "We competed at a high level. Our guys handled the transition of conditions throughout the tournament very well. I felt really strong about how we played through 12 holes today. This is something we can build off of."
Dunsire carded his second under-par round of the tournament in Tuesday's final round with a two-under par 70. He opened the tournament with a three-under 69 on Sunday. Dunsire tied for 10
th place individually with a four-under par 54-hole score of 212.
"I was hitting it pretty well off the tee and keeping the ball in play," Dunsire said about his performance over the last three days. "I was making putts today and Sunday. It was a solid first tournament."
"I thought he was out there being patient and trusting his strengths," added Carlson. "The rest of the guys fed off him this week. We do need five guys every week that will compete at a high level, and I like what I've seen through the first three weeks."
Michael Mattas (Streamwood, Ill./St. Edward Central Catholic) carded his second consecutive under par round on Tuesday with a two-under par 70. After posting a 79 in round one, Mattas played the final 36 holes at three-under par. He finished the tournament tied for 36
th at four-over par. Senior
Jordan Less (Elmhurst, Ill./York) finished the tournament tied for 58
th with a three-round score of 224, eight strokes over par. Less carded a final round 76 on Tuesday. Freshman
Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) wrapped up his first tournament as a collegian with a +3 75 on Tuesday, finishing the tournament tied for 62
nd at +9.
NIU had a team score of three-over par 291 for the second straight round Tuesday, led by Dunsire and Mattas' rounds of 70. The Huskies finished the tournament in 12
th place at +17, 11 strokes behind Wisconsin.
The Huskies are next in action at the Windon Memorial September 16-17, hosted by Northwestern at Conway Farms Golf Club.
