PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - Facing a tournament field that included five of the top 50 teams in the GolfStat rankings, the Northern Illinois University men's golf team wrapped up play at the Saint Mary's Invitational Wednesday in 17th place at Poppy Hills Golf Club.
Graduate Student Michael Cascino (Palos Park, Ill./Providence Catholic/Butler) was the Huskies' top finisher on the week, tying for 34th with a 54-hole score of two-over par 215. He opened the tournament with a two-under par 69 on the par-71 course. Cascino then posted back-to-back rounds of 73 on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Senior Tommy Dunsire (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) tied for 53rd at five-over par with rounds of 72, 73 and 73. His 72 on Monday, paired with Cascino's 69, Reece Nilsen's (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills/Grand Canyon) one-under par 70 and Luc Warnock's (Windsor, Ontario, Canada/E.J. LaJeunesse) led to NIU's best team score of the week. The Huskies recorded a one-under par 283 to put them tied for sixth after the opening round. NIU bounced back Wednesday from a 304 Tuesday with a final round 291to finish at +26, nine strokes ahead of Seattle.
The tournament marked the conclusion of NIU's fall season. The Huskies' next scheduled tournament is the Aggie Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M at Traditions Club April 9-10, 2022.
