COLUMBUS, Ohio – Michael Cascino (Palos Park, Ill./Providence Catholic/Butler),
Reece Nilsen (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills/Grand Canyon), and
Zach Place (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park) all placed in the top-20 at this weekend's Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State at Columbus Country Club. As a team, the Huskies finished in 10
th place.
Cascino had his best finish as a Huskie this season, leading NIU with a 54-hole score of one-under par 215 to tie for 15
th place. The graduate student had the Huskies' lowest score in Saturday's opening round with a one-under par 71. He had four birdies and an eagle in the opening round, making birdie on the final hole to finish his 71. Cascino posted an even par 72 in Saturday's second round and had another 72 on Sunday for NIU's lowest score of the final round.
Nilsen opened the tournament with a two-over par 74 Saturday morning. He bounced back in the second round with a two-under par 70, the best round by any Huskie on the weekend. Nilsen was even par through 13 holes in Saturday's afternoon round and birdied the 14
th and 18
th holes to finish two-under on the round. He posted a one-over par 73 on Sunday to finish in a tie for 19
th at +1.
Place, playing as an individual, also tied for 19
th at one-over par. The junior had five birdies in his opening round but finished with an even par 72. He carded a one-under 71 in Saturday's second round, highlighted by an eagle on 18. Place wrapped up the weekend with a 74 on Sunday.
Senior
Tommy Dunsire (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) finished in the top-40 with a 54-hole score of four-over par 220. He bookended a 74 Saturday afternoon with two rounds of 73.
The Huskies finished the tournament at +15, one stroke behind Michigan in ninth and six ahead of 11
th-place Toledo. NIU improved by five strokes from Saturday's eight-over 296 first round to a three-over 291 in the second round. The Huskies had a four-over par team score of 292 on Sunday. Illinois, ranked number 20 in the GolfStat rankings, won the tournament by 13 strokes over the host Buckeyes.
NIU hosts the 2022 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship April 29-May 1 at White Eagle Golf Club in Naperville. Play begins at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30. The final round on Sunday, May 1 begins at 8 a.m. CT.
