ALLENDALE, Mich. – Kadeja Campbell (St. Ann, Jamaica) won the 400-meter dash as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team competed at the Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday (Feb. 10). Campbell's title in the 400 is her second meet victory in the event this season.
"The athletes competed today with purpose," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Grand Valley always has great competition and we get the opportunity to see a number of other MAC teams. Our group sharpened up its execution in every event, showed heart, and most are walking away with seasons best.
"It's coming down to the wire to qualify or move up in the conference to seal a spot, preferred lanes, and later flights for the jumps. It was imperative that the ladies capitalized on this weekend and do the same next weekend. The staff is proud of the team today and are looking forward to seeing more improvements next Friday at Wisconsin."
Campbell ran a season-best time of 55.19 seconds to win the 400, the fastest time in the Mid-American Conference this season and six one-hundredths ahead of second-place Chloe Freilinger of Bellarmine (55.25). In the morning sections of the 400,
Roshell Rowe (Manchester, N.J.) ran a season-best time of 57.76 seconds to finish second while
Christine Irving (St. James, Jamaica) was fourth in 57.92, also a season-best.
In the 200 meters,
Skylynn Blue (Indianapolis, Ind.) took second with the best time in the MAC this season, 24.34 seconds, winning her heat and finishing just two one-hundredths of a second behind first-place Jetta Mays of DePaul (24.32).
A pair of Huskies posted season-best marks in the long jump.
Henriette Halwas (Knittlingen, Germany) was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 5.38 meters (17-07.75), set on her fourth attempt of the competition. In the invitational section of the long jump,
Aquilla St. Louis (D'Abadie, Trinidad and Tobago) claimed fifth with a mark of 5.37 meters (17-07.50). St. Louis hit that mark with her third jump of the day.
Scout Regular (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded her fifth top-three finish of the season in the 60-meter hurdles. Regular ran a time of 8.52 seconds, her second-best of the season, in a final where the top-three were separated by just five one-hundredths of a second.
NIU will return to action next Friday, Feb. 17, in its final meet before the conference championship as it travels to Madison, Wis., for the Badger Invitational.
