Calloway Wins High Jump at Wisconsin Midwest Invite

CHICAGO – Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo.) won the high jump title as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team competed at the Wisconsin Midwest Invite on Saturday (Jan. 11) at the Worrill Indoor Track Center.

"Today's competition was a testament to the type of athletes we have on this team," said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. "Some of our athletes returned landing off international flights less than 36 hours ago, others had no track to practice on over break, while others competed in events they have never done. They are a coach's dream group. There were no complaints and they gave every effort to step off the track or field with performances they can be proud of starting with.

"Each meet, this group will improve because they have the desire to be the best and that's a mental edge. The actual marks and times ran or jumped today don't come close to what these ladies are able to achieve and we welcome the challenge of getting better."

Calloway cleared 1.75 meters (5-08.75), a top 25 mark in the nation this season, to earn top honors in the high jump. NIU's Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) finished second at 1.70 meters (5-07.00) and Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C.) was the third Huskie to finish in the top five, clearing 1.65 meters (5-05.00) to finish fifth.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the NIU quartet of Emma Curry (Oakville, Ontario), Olivia Southby (New South Wales, Australia), Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) and Sam Huber (Villingendorf, Germany) earned a runner-up finish with a time of 4:05.47, trailing only DePaul (4:00.42).

Precious Umukoro (Villareal, Spain) claimed a runner-up finish in the long jump with a mark of 5.80m (19-00.50), finishing behind only Jenelle Rogers of Ball State (6.04m). Umukoro was also fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 11.88m (38-11.75).

Sadiya Shamsid-Deen (McDonough, Ga.) was fourth in the 300-meter dash, running a time of 40.45 seconds.

NIU will return to action next Friday, Jan. 17, as the Huskies compete in Iowa State's Bill Bergan Open in Ames, Iowa.
