TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) won the high jump and
Bailey Wilk (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) won the 3,000 meters as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team finished the indoor regular season at the John Gartland Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 22).
"What a great end to the regular season," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "We add a couple more athletes to the MAC list and inked a few more personnel best performances. We walk into MAC with a solid group of ladies that are ready to compete.
"We are a young team, so it will not be easy for them, but if they continue to take the coaching cues and add their desire to continue improving, we should fair decent. I'm proud of their progress and look forward to seeing them lace up next week at conference."
Dendy earned a high jump title for the second consecutive weekend as she cleared 1.72 meters (5-07.75) on her first attempt at the height, bettering Indiana State's Ellie Irwin via the tiebreaker.
Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was third, clearing 1.68 meters (5-06.00) and
Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) finished sixth at 1.58 meters (5-02.25).
Wilk ran a PR time of 10:26.31 to take the top spot in the 3,000 meters. The Huntley, Ill., native's time was more than five seconds better than second-place Callie Swegman of Hanover (10:31.44).
In the 200 meters,
Sadiya Shamsid-Deen (McDonough, Ga./Sprayberry) took second, running a time of 25.54 seconds. Shamsid-Deen, whose time ranks 23rd in the Mid-American Conference this season, won heat two and was bettered overall by just Taylor Johnson of Evansville, who ran 25.40 to take heat one.
Two Huskies finished in the top-five of the 60 meters as
Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) took third and
Sam Huber (Villingendorf, Germany) was fourth. Momalife ran a time of 7.79 seconds, a new PR and a top-30 time in the MAC this season, in the final. Huber ran 7.96 seconds in the final and ran 7.94 seconds in the qualifying heats.
Xiomara Malone (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) recorded a season-best mark of 5.40 meters (17-08.75) in the long jump, finishing fourth.
NIU will now turn its attention to the MAC Indoor Championships this coming Friday and Saturday (Feb. 28-March 1), hosted by Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich.
