AMES, Iowa – Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) won the high jump competition as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team competed at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday (Feb. 8).
"Today the staff saw some great execution from the athletes which translated into several PR's and MAC standing improvements," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "We could see the confidence starting to shine through in most events and their looks of achievement when events concluded. They are beginning to put it together at the right time in the season."
Raes, who also won the high jump at the Blue & Gold Invitational and the Bill Bergan Open, cleared 1.74 meters (5-08.50) at Iowa State to take the title.
Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) claimed second as she cleared 1.71 meters (5-07.25) while
Samira Rosenfeld (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) tied for fifth as she eclipsed 1.53 meters (5-00.25).
Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) earned a pair of top-three finishes as she finished second in the long jump, leaping 5.79 meters (19-00.00), just three one-hundredths of a meter (1.25 inches) behind first-place Rosjai Curtis (5.82m, 19-01.25). In the triple jump, Umukoro's top mark measured 12.00 meters (39-04.50) to claim third place.
Aniya Barton (Lansing, Ill./Thornton Fractional South) finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.06 meters (36-03.50), a top-15 mark in the Mid-American Conference this season.
On the track,
Sadiya Shamsid-Deen (McDonough, Ga./Sprayberry) led a pair of Huskies in the top-six of the 400 meters. Shamsid-Deen ran a time of 56.14 seconds to take third, a season-best time and 10th-best in the MAC this year.
Roshell Rowe (Manchester, N.J./Manchester) was sixth in 56.68, also a season-best and 13th in the conference.
Bailey Wilk (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) recorded a season-best time of 18:25.26 in the 5,000 meters to finish seventh.
NIU will be back in action next weekend at a pair of events. The Huskies will compete at the Windy City Invite, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, at the Worrill Indoor Track Facility in Chicago on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14-15, as well as the Chicagoland Indoor Championship at North Central College in Naperville on Friday, Feb. 14.
