WACO, Texas -- Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and
Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) finished in the top-10 in the high jump while
Giorgia Fino (Francavila Fontana, Italy) claimed a top-10 in the javelin for the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team at Baylor's Michael Johnson Invitational.
"Great weather but we did not capitalize in all the events we needed to," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Baylor and Bryan Clay are intimidating competitions and if an athlete walks onto the track without confidence, it can definitely mess with your mental ability. We will keep training the mental just as much as the physical by heading to the Drake Relays, Simpson, and ONU next weekend.
"They are ready to do big things, but their belief in self and execution has to be on point. Our ladies that did just that were
Giorgia Fino in the javelin,
Stella Oyebode in the 100 meters,
Jasmijn Raes in the high jump at Baylor and
Emma Vorpagel and
Rachel Dietrich both competing at Bryan Clay. Their ability to work through their mental states to gain confidence was strong which aided in their PR's, seasons best, and competitive performances. Huskies don't give up, so back to the lab until we get them all competing like these five."
Fino was seventh in the javelin as she recorded a season-best mark of 39.56 meters (129-09) on her third attempt of the competition. Fino's mark is the seventh-best in the Mid-American Conference this spring.
In the high jump, Raes led the way for the Huskies, clearing 1.73 meters (5-08.00) to finish fifth. The freshman from the Netherlands was just one one-hundredth of a meter off of her outdoor season high mark this spring. Dendy was just behind, clearing 1.68 meters (5-06.00) to take sixth.
Stella Oyebode (Nigeria) ran a season-best time of 11.83 to lead the Huskies in the 100-meter dash. Oyebode finished just outside the top-20 at the meet with a time that is tied for the eighth-best in the MAC this year.
In the triple jump,
Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) finished 15th with a best leap of 11.75 meters (38-06.75) while, competing in her hometown,
Talayssia Sanders (Waco, Texas/Waco Connally) was 20th in the 400 meters running 56.50.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational,
Emma Vorpagel (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) ran the third-fastest 800-meter time in the MAC this season, clocking in at 2:09.19.
Rachel Dietrich (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) also posted a top-30 time in the conference in the 800, running 2:16.62.
Next weekend, the Huskies will travel to a handful of different meets, highlighted by the Drake Relay (April 24-26). NIU will also compete at the Kip Janvrin Open and the ONU Outdoor Open.
