DeKALB, Ill. – A strong start on the uneven parallel bars from the Northern Illinois University gymnastics team (8-2,3-1) ranked third in the school record book with 49.225. Senior
Jamyra Carter (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) finished the event for the Huskies hitting the highest mark (9.925) on the event since Alisha Conahan posted the exact score in 1999 to tie for the second highest in school history.
"The bars team came out and got it done," said NIU head coach
Sam Morreale. "There was a little hiccup in the middle, but they definitely rallied around that. The one's who hit, hit really well, and the two who went up before Jamyra set her up. She just nailed her routine."
The Huskies' win over Western Michigan University marked the team's fifth consecutive, 195.350-193.800. The 195.350 total team score ranked on NIU's top-10 all-around list at sixth with solid scores on all four events.
After the team's season high start on uneven parallel bars, NIU went on to score a 49.600 on vault, 48.800 on floor and finished up on beam tying the season high of 48.725.
"We've been chasing 195.00 all year," said Morreale. "It's nice to be getting out there and hitting on all events and showing that that's who we are.
"We weren't necessarily at our season highs on all of our events, but based on being able to adjust the lineup and still put up a high score is a testament to our depth. This was a great team performance even with some top performers out this week."
The balance beam squad put together the meet that they had been working back towards after week one. Senior
Andie Van Voorhis (Columbus, Ohio/Hilliard) started the event off for the Huskies with a 9.825 matching her season high, and junior
Katherine Prentice and senior
Megan Greenfield (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South) concluded the event with a 9.825 and a 9.800, respectively.
"That's what we've been looking for from beam, and that's what we see every day in practice," said Morreale. "It was nice to see them put it together in a meet. We weren't perfect anywhere, but we were improved and that's the key."
Prentice displayed her talents with her third all-around score over 39.000, earning a 39.025 against the broncos and tied her personal record on uneven parallel bars (9.775). Freshman
Cinny Lamberti (Grayslake, Ill./Grayslake) set her personal record on vault with a 9.725, junior
Ashley Potts (Oakwood Hills, Ill./Prairie Ridge) matched her season high on bars (9.875) and
Megan Gilliam (Fishers, Ind./Fishers) set her season high on bars with a 9.800
