CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team won four events on Saturday (Jan. 22) at the Illini Invitational in the UI Armory.
Jahnetta Jones (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) won the 200 meters,
Emma Vorpagel (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) claimed the 800,
Scout Regular (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) took first in the 60-meter hurdles and
Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) bettered the field in the triple jump.
"Another meet in the books and another chance for our athletes to improve their technique," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "The majority of our student-athletes have heavy legs from practice last week, but the staff was pleased with their relentless efforts. We have a way to go, however there is no doubt this group will be ready when it counts."
In the hurdles, Regular was one of three Huskies to qualify for the final, along with
Dymier Jeffery (Richmond, Va./South Carolina) and
Taylor Ramsey (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood Central). Regular qualified with the third-fastest time out of the prelims, running a time of 8.98 seconds, but then posted the best time of the day in the final, clocking in at 8.66 seconds to take first. Ramsey was fifth in 9.31 seconds in the final.
Jones paced the field in the 200 meters with a time of 25.27 seconds, the fourth-best time in the MAC this season, comfortably ahead of second-place Destiny White of Illinois State, who ran 25.60 seconds.
The 800 meters was dominated by Huskies, with Vorpagel winning with a time of 2:24.51.
Kennedy Crawford (Douglasville, Ga./Alexander) finished second, clocking in at 2:24.55, while
Kayla La Fontain was third in 2:24.76.
Majors rounded out the NIU event wins by taking top honors in the triple jump, one week after winning the long jump at the Bob Eubanks Open. Majors recorded a mark of 11.78m (38-07.75) on her second attempte of the competition, nearly three inches ahead of second-place Kayla Bushey (11.71m, 38-05.00) of the Running Wild Elite Club. NIU's
Katrina Small (Atlanta, Ga./Arkansas-Pine Bluff) was third with a mark of 11.66m (38-03.25).
