Huskies Have Strong Showing at Meyo Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team turned in numerous impressive performances at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational this Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5), including a pair of runner-up finishes as Kadeja Campbell (St. Ann, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) took second in the 200 meters and Jazmyn Smith (Pinecrest, Fla./Gulliver Prep) finished second in the long jump.

"We had one of our best showings at the prestigious Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame," said NIU Director of Track and Field Connie Teaberry. "The athletes are starting to put technical aspects of their events together and it is showing. We had several personal and seasonal best that move athletes up on the MAC list into the top 10. We are three weeks out from the MAC Championships which keep them grinding on the track physically, and off the track mentally, in preparation for the conference meet. I am proud of their efforts and looking forward to the next couple weeks."

In the 200 meters, Campbell led four Huskies in the top-seven with her second-place finish in 24.38 seconds, finishing just 0.04 seconds behind MaQuila Norman of Ball State. Skylynn Blue (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) was fourth in 24.67 seconds and Malia Watkins (Upper Marlboro, Md./Missouri State) was seventh in 24.70.

Campbell also had a strong showing in the 400-meter dash where she finished fourth with a time of 55.73 seconds, the second-best time in the Mid-American Conference this season.

Smith turned in a second-place performance in the long jump with a top mark of 5.90 meters (19-04.25), which ranks in the top-five in the MAC. Smith's best leap came on her fifth jump and was just a half-inch (0.01 meters) behind Central Michigan's Hayley Manners for top honors. Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) took sixth with a mark of 5.60 meters.

Three Huskies also finished in the top-10 in the triple jump, led by Katrina Small (Atlanta, Ga./Arkansas-Pine Bluff) with a mark of 12.28 meters (40-03.5). Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) was sixth at 12.13 meters (39-09.75) and Majors claimed 10th, jumping 11.60 meters (38-00.75).

Elsewhere on the track, Kimone Hines (Hanover, Jamaica/Southern-New Orleans) and Scout Regular (St. Louis, Mo./Incarnate Word Academy) worked their way through the heats and into the finals of the 60 meters and the 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Hines took sixth in the 60 meters with a time of 7.67, and Regular was fourth in the hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds, third-fastest in the MAC this season.

NIU will return to competition next Friday night, Feb. 11, when the Huskies travel to Allendale, Mich., for the GVSU Big Meet.
