Huskies Finish Third at MAC Championships

Romancew, Naro Claim Top 10 FInishes

GROVE CITY, Ohio – Huskie seniors Emily Romancew and Sydney Naro each placed in the Top 10 to lead the Northern Illinois University women's golf team to its sixth straight top three finish at the MAC Championships Tuesday at Pinnacle Golf Club in Grove City, Ohio.

Romancew (Pierrefonds, Quebec, Can./ Ecole Secondaire Des Sources) and Naro (Toronto, Ontario, Can./ Hills International Golf Academy) were NIU's most consistent golfers throughout the 54-hole tournament, including in the final round when they each shot 77. Romancew's round was highlighted by an eagle on the par 5 fourth hole.  Romancew's total of 13-over 229 was good for seventh place overall, with Naro one stroke back, tied for eighth, at 14-over 230.

"It was good to see Emily and Sydney put together three decent rounds," said NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Overall, we didn't have our best golf. The course was difficult, and some pins were less than favorable. Yesterday the average score was just over 80 and today it was 80.5, so that tells you right there how the course was set up. It was a tough few days, but it doesn't define our entire season."

The Huskies' third round score of 316 allowed them to finish two strokes ahead of fourth place Ball State with a 54-hole total of 937.  NIU has placed second or third behind perennial champion Kent State in every MAC Championship tournament beginning in 2017. The Golden Flashes won the title for the 25th time (every year it has been held) with a score of 45-over par 909 after a final round 301. Toledo was second, 11 strokes back.

NIU senior Jasmine Ly (Windsor, Ontario, Can./ Holy Names High School) closed out her Huskie career by tying for 25th with a final round 81 to finish at 25-over 241. Junior Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) also posted an 81 Tuesday. Caroline Kent (Frisco, Texas/ iUniversity Prep) shot 83 and placed 20th at 23-over 239.

The MAC Championships marked the final collegiate competition for Ly, Naro, Romancew and teammate Karen Liu (Taipei, Taiwan/Taipei Municipal Heping). Kester thanked the foursome for their contribution to Huskie women's golf.

"Super grateful for our seniors and what they've given to the NIU women's program," Kester said. "They all made a positive impact. This group was special because we had the COVID adversity that brought us a little closer.  We'll miss them, they'll do big things in the world, and it will be fun to watch their next chapter."
