Women's Golf | September 23
EAST LANSING, Mich.—Alexa Ouellet (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/De La Salle College) and
Emma Thorman (Macomb, Illinois/Macomb) led the Huskies at the Mary Fossum Invitational as the Northern Illinois University women's golf team took 12th at the tournament.
The Huskies placed ahead of Kennesaw State University, Oakland, and fellow-MAC school Toledo. The tournament field featured four schools from the Big Ten, two SEC schools, and ACC in one of the toughest fields the Huskies will see this season. The Huskies posted round scores of 305, 307, and 307 at the par 72 Forest Akers West Course.
Mia Raines (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) led the Huskies in the first round, shooting two over par (74) while Thorman carded a 75 in the first round. Ouellet led the Huskies in the second and third rounds with a 73 in the second round and 75 in the third round.
"This is a super strong field. Ole Miss has won a championship, Michigan, Michigan State, and Florida have all been contenders. It gives our players a taste of that next level golf," said NIU head coach
Kim Kester. "We gave some shots away yesterday and got some back today. They handled the conditions well with how much it rained yesterday and how the course played today."
Ouellet had a total of five birdies, with three coming in her final round for the Huskies. Ouellet finished in a tie for 35th to lead the Huskies, shooting 10 over par after three rounds. Ouellet second nine in the second round was bogey free as she shot one over in the second round.
Thorman claimed a top-40 finish, with a seven-way tie for 40th. In Thorman's second round, she carded four birdies in six holes as she went one under in the second nine of that round. Thorman had a total of eight birdies for the Huskies.
Raines carded one of only four eagles at the tournament, with the eagle coming in the first round on the fifth hole. Raines added four additional birdies for the Huskies including consecutive holes in the second round.
Caroline Kent (Frisco, Texas/iUniversity Prep) carded two birdies in the first round while
Dakota Tallent (Las Vegas, Nevada/Bishop Gorman) had a lone birdie in her first round for the Huskies.
"We are seeing bright spots early in the fall and we know we have things to work on. We have a quick turnaround here as we head into Iowa next weekend and Illinois tournament the following week."
The Huskies return to the course on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 as they compete at the Diane Thomason Invitational, hosted by the University of Iowa.
