AMES, Iowa – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team took top honors in the 400 meters, high jump and triple jump as the Huskies competed at Iowa State's Bill Bergan Open on Friday (Jan. 17).
Sadiya Shamsid-Deen (McDonough, Ga./Sprayberry) won the 400,
Jasmijn Raes (Amsterdam, Netherlands) was first in the high jump and
Precious Umukoro (Villarreal, Spain) was victorious in the triple jump.
"Today we headed in the right direction," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "We had additional athletes on the track to compete than last week and others continuing to build off last week's performances. The athletes continue to compete and improve learning something about their races, technique and bodies. We are a young group, so I am enjoying watching the athletes figure things out. It will all come together as long as they remain competitive."
The Huskies swept the top three spots in the high jump, with Raes taking top honors. Raes cleared the bar at 1.73 meters (5-08.00) and took first in a tiebreak over teammate
Kamiya Dendy (Anderson, S.C./Pendleton) who had two misses earlier in the competition.
Arianna Calloway (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) finished third as she cleared 1.70 meters (5-07.00).
In the triple jump, Umukoro recorded the second-best mark in the MAC this season with a jump of 11.91 meters (39-01.00).
The 400-meter run saw a pair of Huskies post times that would rank in the top-10 in the conference as Shamsid-Deen finished first in a season-best time of 57.60 seconds, eighth-fastest in the league this year.
Emma Curry (Oakville, Ontario) was second, running 58.26.
In the 60-meter dash,
Sam Huber (Villingendorf, Germany) and
Esther Momalife (Lagos, Nigeria) advanced to the final. Huber finished second, running 7.84 seconds while Momalife claimed third in 7.88 seconds. Savannah Ming of Drake took first in 7.69 seconds.
Three Huskies finished in the top-four in the 200 meters where Shamsid-Deen finished second with a time of 25.54 seconds. Momalife finished third in a time of 25.65 seconds and Huber was fourth in 26.30.
The Huskies will be off next weekend before returning to competition at Notre Dame's Meyo Invitational on Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1.
