Women's Golf | February 12

LITCHFIELD PARK, AZ— Alexa Ouellet (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/De La Salle College) finished in third place at the BGSU Women's Intercollegiate Invitational as the Northern Illinois University Huskies tied for fifth as a team.

Ouellet, Caroline Kent (Frisco, Texas/iUniversity Prep), and Emma Thorman (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) all carded rounds of 79 or better.

Ouellet, the freshman from Toronto, led the Huskies taking third for her highest finish of the season. In her season-best, Ouellet had six birdies in the final round of the competition to finish even at 71 on the day. Ouellet went two over in the first round with a round of 73 which featured four consecutive birdies. In the second round, Ouellet had zero birdies to finish four over par at 75.

"We only put one really good round together in the second round," noted NIU head coach Kim Kester. "Unfortunately, when the pressure mattered, we weren't making the shots. Emma, Caroline, and Alexa played well this week, and Alexa had a string of birdies to give herself some confidence. The fight they had yesterday was great against the elements with the cold and wind. We will go back to the drawing board as we prepare for the GCU tournament in two weeks."

Kent had a top-10 finish as she went fifteen over three rounds. Kent added a trio of birdies, including a pair on the back nine. Kent's best round came in the second round, going two over par at 73. Kent grabbed a trio of birdies for a combined six in the first two rounds, as she saw consecutive birdies on Holes 17 and 18.

Mia Raines (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) carded four birdies over three rounds, with two coming in the second round. Her best round was the second round, going just three over par as she collected her best finish of the season.

Dakota Tallent (Las Vegas, Nevada/Bishop Gorman) had a trio of birdies in the second round, her best round of the tournament. Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Commercial College of Iceland) carded four birdies over the two-day tournament. Lúðvíksdóttir's best round was her first, going just six over par, before carding a pair of birdies in the second round.

Thorman competed as an independent golfer for the Huskies, finishing in the top-30 of all competitors. Thorman carded a single birdie in the final round to go just three over on the day.

Team Summary

NIU tallied 10 birdies in the first round as they shot a combined 308. Three Huskies birdied three different holes. Ouellet and Kent each birdied Hole 14, Kent, and Raines birded Hole 1, while Kent and Lúðvíksdóttir birdied Hole 10.

Carding a score of under 300 in the second round, Kent and Tallent led the Huskies with three birdies each in the second round. The Huskies finished in a tie for fifth alongside Eastern Kentucky. They were eight strokes behind invitational leaders Weber State, who shot a 904 over the two-day tournament.

The Huskies return to action and Arizona as they compete in the Grand Canyon University Invitational, February 25-26. Action will take place at the GCU Golf Course in Phoenix.
