ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Illinois University women's track and field team earned three wins on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 6) at Grand Valley State's Snowdown Showdown. Sophomore sprinter
Jahnetta Jones (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) claimed two of those wins, in the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.
In the long jump, junior
Jazmyn Smith (Pinecrest, Fla./Gulliver Prep) continued her consistent start to the season, picking up her second win of the year with a mark of 5.70 meters (18-08.50) to bring home a victory.
"This is another competition under our belts and the athletes continue to impress the staff with their performances and heart," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Most of the athletes have been grinding hard, playing catch-up from past seasons. Yet they continue to clock competitive times and marks.
"We have been preaching 'trust the process' and one practice and competition at a time, and they are listening and trusting. When you have the trust of your athletes anything is possible. Over half the athletes moved up their standing on the MAC performance list. We are heading in the right competitive direction."
In the 200 meters, Jones clocked a time of 24.76 seconds for the win over Eastern Michigan's Mair Edwards (24.88), while in the 400, Jones led a Huskie one-two with a time of 56.28 seconds, freshman
Kennedy Crawford (Douglasville, Ga./Alexander) was second in 56.77 while junior
Kaitlyn Lewis (Liberty, Mo./Liberty) was fourth in 57.08.
NIU had three runners finish in the top-three of the 800 meters with senior
Victoria Robinson (Lansing, Mich./Lansing) in third in 2:14.01, senior
Nora Finegan (Palatine, Ill./Fremd) in fourth in 2:14.99 and sophomore
Brooke Lytle (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) fifth in 2:15.28.
Junior
Diamond Riley (St. Louis, Mo./Ritenour) was second in the triple jump with a best leap of 11.60 meters (38-00.75) while junior
Kimone Hines (Hanover, Jamaica/Southern-New Oreleans) was second in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.54 seconds in the final.
