RICHMOND, Ky. – The Northern Illinois University women's golf team recorded one of its best rounds of the spring season to finish third at the 2022 Colonel Classic. NIU's team score of 11 over par 299 tied its best round of the spring and the Huskies' third-place finish in the 13-team field tied for its highest place of the year.
Sophomore
Jasmine Ly closed out the tournament with NIU's best round, a par 72, on Tuesday to tie for eighth and earn her sixth Top 10 finish of the season. Ly shot rounds of 77, 74 and 72 for a 54-hole total of seven-over par 223.
Senior
Sofia Gomez Enriquez backed up Ly with a two-over par 74 Tuesday to put the finishing touch on her top showing of the 2021-22 season. Gomez Enriquez tied for 11th at nine-over par 225 after posting scores of 75-76-74 at the University Club at Arlington course.
"It was good to see Sofia and Jasmine play well in this event," said NIU head coach
Kim Kester. "Today, two holes gave us trouble, and we need to clean up on the par fives, but overall, it was a solid day and a solid tournament. We have a quick turnaround with travel and then the [Redbird Spring Invitational] starts on Friday. That will be our last tournament before MAC Championships so will be looking to build on this finish."
In addition to Ly and Gomez Enriquez, Huskies Jóhanna Lúðvíksdóttir and
Ahra Ko contributed to NIU's total on Tuesday with rounds of 77 and 76, respectively. For the tournament, Lúðvíksdóttir tied for 20
th at 11-over par 227. She led NIU on day one of the tournament with rounds of 74 and 76.
As a team, NIU finished seven strokes behind second place Georgia State as tournament host Eastern Kentucky ran away with a 22-stroke victory. The Huskies moved up one spot on Tuesday to finish five strokes ahead of fourth place Cleveland State, as well as MAC opponents Akron (tied for sixth) and Ball State (11th).
The Huskies open play in the Redbird Spring Invitational in Normal, Illinois on Friday. Action gets underway at the par 72, 6,010-yard layout on Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with the first 18 holes; teams then will play 36 holes on Saturday. Follow live scores on Golfstat.com.
