DeKALB, Ill. – Among the more than 2,100 students who earned their degrees from Northern Illinois University earlier this month were 112 current and former Huskie student-athletes. The student-athlete contingent, including master's and bachelor's degree recipients, represented all 17 NIU sports programs with at least one graduate from six of the university's seven colleges.
 
The 112 graduates represent one of the largest groups of student-athletes to earn degrees in a single commencement season as nearly a quarter of the Huskies' student-athlete population graduated. The list includes both spring and summer (projected) graduates.
 
"In this day and age, it is more important than ever to celebrate the life-changing achievement of earning a college degree," said NIU Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Sean T. Frazier. 'We are so proud as a department to have been a part of these students' journey to obtaining that NIU degree."
 
Twenty-three current or former members of the Huskie football team earned their degrees, including 13 who will return to the team in 2024.  Another 18 graduates were members of the NIU baseball team while women's soccer placed 11 grads on the list. 
 
The College of Education produced the largest number of student-athlete graduates with 37 earning their degrees from majors like kinesiology and sport management, with 32 Huskies earning degrees from NIU's College of Business, including 11 who finished a master's in business administration. Women's basketball player Brooke Stonebraker was the only Huskie graduate in this class from the College of Visual and Performing Arts.
