BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Junior
Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) won the triple jump and two school records fell as the Northern Illinois University women's track and field team finished tied for seventh at the Mid-American Conference Championships at UB Stadium.
Sophomore
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) set a new school record and the 100-meter hurdles and freshman
Ashley Tutt (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) broke the school mark in the 5,000 meters as the Huskies finished the meet with 58 points, along with Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio). Akron won the team competition with 136.5 points.
Tutt was also named the MAC Women's Track Freshman Performer of the Year for her performances in the 5,000 as well as the 10,000 meters, where she finished sixth on Thursday.
"I'm proud of all the girl's efforts today," said NIU Director of Track and Field
Connie Teaberry. "Strong efforts in every event, even the girls that didn't score. They laid it all on the track again and that helped us move up in the points total.
"We are a young team, but we told them last night that is no excuse. We are here and here to perform and to see those young ladies like
Ashley Tutt, NeShay (Curtis), (Mackenzie) Callahan step up and put points on the board, Khenadi (Jones) in the 100. It is a testament to where this team is headed and the future, which looks bright."
Competing in the second of two flights in the triple jump, Whyte immediately jumped to the top of the rankings with a leap of 12.96m (42-6 1/4) on her first jump of the day. Whyte bettered her mark with a jump of 13.08m (42-11) on her second jump.
On her fifth jump of the day, Whyte again measured over 13 meters, the only competitor in the field to do so. With her sixth, and final, jump, Whyte reached a mark of 13.29m (43-7 1/4), setting a new MAC Championships record while clinching the first MAC triple jump title in school history.
Whyte entered the weekend ranked 10th nationally in the triple jump this season.
"Jehvania is a gamer," said Teaberry of the triple jump champion. "Just like the long jump, she stepped up today and took the 10 points and the win. Her goal today was to get the meet record, and she got the meet record. She told me she was going to put 10 points on the board, she did that and got a record out of it."
Senior
Chennel Palmer (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) tied for second in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.64m (5-4 1/2). Palmer and Eastern Michigan's Dace Dreimane each cleared the mark on their first attempt to tie for second. The only competitor to jump higher was Ball State's Regan Lewis with a winning height of 1.79m (5-10 1/2).
Amarteifio set a new school record in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing third with a time of 13.48 seconds. Amarteifio's time just edged the previous school-best of 13.49 set by Latesha Bigby at the 2015 NCAA West Region Preliminary.
Another school record fell in the 5,000 meters where Tutt took third in a time of 16:15.03. Tutt was ninth in the field after 2,000m and sixth after 3,800m but continued to move her way through the field to earn a top-three finish and smash the previous school record of 16:30.04 set by
Kelsey Hildreth at the 2016 Drake Relays.
"Ashley is a gamer too," said Teaberry. "She was great in cross country, she was great indoors and today got a school record in the 5K. We talked last night about every single person going above and beyond what they had done before and that's exactly what she did. Remy also, setting a new school record in the 100 hurdles. We had never seen 13.48, but she saw it today."
Senior
Lorena Martin (Salamanca, Spain/IFS Fray Luis de Leon) earned a third-place finish in the 800-meter run. Martin clocked in with a season-best time of 2:09.84 to score six points for the Huskies.
In the 4x100-meter relay, the youngest quartet in the field of three freshmen and a sophomore claimed fourth as Amarteifio, freshman
Khenadi Jones (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City West), freshman
Syanne Johnston (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East) and freshman
Courtney Sockwell (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) clocked a time of 46.19, just 0.005 seconds behind Kent State for third.
In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore
NeShay Curtis (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South Berkeley) used a strong finish, passing three runners in the final 100 meters, to claim fourth-place with a personal best time of 1:00.65.
NIU's 4x400-meter relay team of senior
Ashanti Hutton (Grandview, Mo./Grandview), Curtis, Amarteifio and senior
Doshawn Franks (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) came home in sixth-place with a season-best time of 3:43.31.
With a personal best time of 4:30.27, freshman
Mackenzie Callahan (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) finished eighth and picked up a point for the Huskies in the 1,500-meter run. Callahan was locked in a tight race with Akron's Haley Hess heading around the final turn before running away from Hess in down the stretch to score for the Huskies.
Jones picked up a point for the Huskies in the 100-meter dash, taking eighth in a time of 12.08 seconds.
The NCAA West Region Preliminary is scheduled for Thursday-Saturday, May 24-26, in Sacramento, Calif.
