One of greatest and most versatile athletes in Northern Illinois history. Billed by student newspaper (1939) as FMOC ("Fastest Man on Campus"). Earned seven "NI" letters in basketball (3) and track (4). Known as outstanding sprinter, but gained nationwide "rep" by winning National Amateur Athletic Union decathlon title (6-26/27-42). Captured National AAU decathlon with 6,802 points and won four events (100-meter dash, 400-meter run, broad jump, and discus) in Chicago. Scored 46 points in Central AAU Championships at Chicago with firsts in 100 and 200-meter dashes, and triple jump, plus seconds in discus and broad jump (1941). Won nine Little 19 Conference outdoor crowns in 100 (1939, 1941), 220 (1939-41), 440 (1940), and as anchor on mile relay unit (1939-41). Finished second in team scoring as soph (104 3/4 points in 1939). Voted track captain (1940-41). Tallied 19 1/4 points in Litle 19 outdoor meet (1941). Held Northern Illinois records in 100 (:09.8) and 220 curve (:21.7) until advent of new Grasstex home track (1965). Contributed to Little 19 team crowns in track (1939, 1941) and basketball (15-1 unit in 1940-41). Named All-Century as 6-foot-2 frontcourt player during basketball Centennial (2000-01). One of earliest Huskie dunk shot artists "who lifts ball out of the basket on rebounds." SMU transfer. Sister Mary Terwilliger inducted into NIU HOF (1996). Brother George Terwilliger (1923-24) and son John Terwilliger (1965-67) lettered in football at NIU. IHSA 100-yard dash champ (1936) and 100 runner-up (1935). DeKalb High product.
