The "Jocko" of all trades to program's football, wrestling, and tennis student-athletes. Beloved, loyal aide to Hall of Fame coach Howard Fletcher during halcyon Northern Illinois grid era when Huskies moved into national spotlight with three IIAC titles (1963-65), three Mineral Water Bowl appearances (1962-63, 1965), NAIA/AP College Division National Championship (1963), and new stadium (1965). Coached O-line and D-line, plus specialized on defense. Produced one NFL draft choice (T Tom Rosenow), NFL free agents (DT Dave Mulderink, DE Bob Stark, DT Lynn McCann, and DT Roger Stark), and one Little All-America (C Bob Evans). Served as head wrestling coach for two years (1960-62) and put finishing touches on two NAIA champs (Hall of Famers Ray Guzak at 167 pounds and Roy Conrad at 177 in 1961), plus All-America Bill Kontos at 130 in 1961 and future All-America and HOFer Mel Schmidt at 177 in 1964-65. Led NIU to 6-5-0 and 7-2-1 dual-meet marks and second place in IIAC (1962). Left his mark on fabled Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame doubles combo of Tim and Tom Gullikson (1970-73). Began athletics career at Chicago Leo High where he won three varsity football letters. Performed on Leo eleven that won Catholic League title and played Austin High in historic City Championship Game that drew 125,000 fans to Soldier Field (1937). Lettered twice at guard on 8-2-0 (Big Ten champs) and 5-3-1 units for Illinois legend Ray Eliot (1946-47). Played in 1947 Rose Bowl and 45-14 win vs. UCLA. World War II U. S. Army veteran.
