Graduated from Chicago Public League to competing vs. world-class foes such as Al Feuerbach, Randy Matson, Brian Oldfield, Karl Salb, George Woods, Dave Davis, plus prep and Hall of Fame college teammate Rick Bilder. Three-time qualifier for U. S. Olympic Trials (1972, 1976, 1980) and made National Team (1976). Set Northern Illinois record with six NCAA appearances (three indoor meets and three outdoor in 1970-72). Set and re-set NIU outdoor shot put record six times. Starting with 55-foot, six-inch toss in dual vs. Western Michigan as frosh (1969) to 59-3 at Southwestern Relays as junior (1971). Became first Huskie and only second collegian in state to crack 60-foot barrier with 60-2 3/4 indoors at University of Chicago Track Open (1972). Posted meet, league, and facility indoor record 60-3 at Midwestern Conference Championships (1972). Broke 60-foot standard nine times in 12 meets competing under UCTC banner. Including career-best 65-1 1/4 at Illini Classic that ranked No. 12 in nation and No. 35 in world by Track & Field News (1976). Competed in two Mason-Dixon Games, two Kansas Relays, four Drake Relays, four U. S. Track & Field Federation Championships, and nine AAU Championships (five indoors) during 1969-80. Placed fourth in shot (60-1 1/4) in U.S. vs. U.S.S.R meet in Leningrad (1976). Placed sixth (60-6) at National Sports Festival (1979). Recorded 52 shot put firsts in 90 NIU meets and scored 379.5 career points. Public League (61-1) and IHSA (57-6 1/4) shot put champ at Lane Tech (1968).
