Tutor. Mentor. Journalist. Patriarch of award-winning Northern Illinois Office of Sports Information. Served as school's first SID as student and returned to alma mater in its burgeoning Division I years. Instrumental in school's elevation to NCAA University Division in football (1969), admittance into MAC (1973), and creation of NIU Athletics HOF (1978). Honored posthumously for significant contributions, loyalty, and service to NIU with naming of Huskie Stadium press box in his and wife's honor (Oct. 13, 2007). "Bud carried a great deal of weight with sportswriters in Chicago and nationally," said HOFer and NIU classmate Bob Brigham. "The press box should be named after him." Pioneered many aspects of his profession. Produced first Huskie football media guide (1948), won school's first national CoSIDA award (best major-college football poster) (1970), expanded coverage of NIU women's athletics (1978-79), and edited first NIU women's recruiting book (1979). Authored CoSIDA Code of Ethics (1974) and chaired group's Committee on Committees (1978-79). Installed into five HOFs?(1) IBCA (1975), (2) NIU (1991), (3) CoSIDA (1993), (4) Northern Star (2002), and (5) Palatine High School (2003). Recipient of Scoop Hudgins Lifetime SID (1997) and Jim Murray Outstanding Sports Writer (2001) awards. Served as executive sports editor of Toledo Blade/Toledo Times (1957-67), staff writer at Chicago Daily News (1950-57), and sports editor of DeKalb Daily Chronicle (1948-50). Played basketball (1940-41) and baseball (1940) at NIU. U. S. Navy vet (1942-46). Registered IHSA cage official. Three-sport letterman at PHS (Deceased).
