Former Northern Illinois captain and lifelong benefactor to the game. "...Prominent amateur whose tireless efforts and dedication...contributed to the formation of the Illinois Junior Golf Association," praised the Illinois PGA website. "...Mike's foresight with the Illinois junior golf programs produced many who are now touring professionals, club managers, and PGA club professionals, and thousands who continue to enjoy their golf experiences from his programs." Enshrined into four halls of fame?NIU Athletics HOF (1986), Illinois PGA HOF (1990), NIU Golf HOF, and Illinois Coaches Association Golf HOF (1995). Recruited by Nye LaBaw and lettered in golf (4) under HOF coach Jack Pheanis. Captained NIU linksmen that finished 11-6 in duals and won IIAC team championship as senior. Carded six-over-par 68-78 ? 146 and finished third in IIAC meet (1960). Shot 70 vs. Bradley and vs. Western Illinois, plus 75 vs. Notre Dame and vs. Southern Illinois in final spring. Played on NCAA College Division Midwest Regional titlist, tied for third in region, and placed eighth in IIAC meet as junior (1959). Captured IIAC individual medalist honors as frosh (1957). Took Midwest, Cook County, Chicago Tribune All-Star, and CDGA Junior Open titles (1957-58). Founded Illinois Junior Golf Association and NIMAGA Junior Open (1967). Served as IJGA president (1967-86). Honored by IJGA with NIU scholarship in his name. Served as captain on IHSA state title links squad for NIU HOFer Tego Larsen at Arlington High School (1956).
