Followed older brother Mark to (1) Northern Illinois, (2) NFL, and (3) Hall of Fame. Ranks as fifth-highest National Football League draft pick in school history. Picked in fifth round (117th player) by Indianapolis Colts (1986). Selected on All-Time Huskie Stadium (1995) and All-Century (1999) squads. Two-time Hall of Famer (1983 football team). Won 16 starts in 17 appearances before being placed on injured reserve in second year. Signed free agent contracts with NFL Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings, plus CFL Ottawa Rough Riders prior to retirement. Ranks among all-time Northern Illinois leaders in (1) single-season tackles for loss (20 for 109 yards in 1984), (2) career tackles for loss (47 for 237 yards), and (3) career tackles (298 in 1982-85). Led Mid-Am in tackles for loss and ranked No. 7 nationally as junior. Named Huskie defensive MVP, MAC Defensive Player of Week vs. Central Michigan, First-Team All-MAC, and AP Honorable Mention All-America (1984). Selected Northern Illinois tri-captain, Second-Team All-Mid-Am, school's Jefferson Trophy nominee as MAC MVP, and pre-season All-America by The Sporting News (1985). Started at DT on 10-2 Mid-Am and California Bowl III kingpins under Hall of Fame coach Bill Mallory as soph (1983). Recipient of Broderick-Andres Award as outstanding Northern Illinois male student-athlete (1985-86). Two-time winner of NIU Abe Rosenbloom Lineman Award (1984-85). Two-sport star at Lake Park High. League discus record-holder and state meet finalist in shot put.
