Pommel horse virtuoso with world-class work ethic, flair, tempo, and legwork. One of premier specialists in U. S. men's gymnastics history. Compared to Stanford all-time great Ted Marcy. Set long list of NIU gymnastics "firsts" (1) initial frosh All-America, (2) first three-time All-America, (3) first back-to-back NCAA titlist, and (4) first Huskie with a perfect "10.0" score. Posted 9.85 in NCAA Championships individual pommel horse finals to edge U. S. Olympian Kurt Thomas en route to second national title (1979). Appeared on ABC-TV's "World Wide of Sports" in highlight package of NCAA meet and also won split-screen PH comparison with Thomas (6-9-79). "(Mike) has much virtuosity in what he does," said HOF NIU coach Chuck Ehrlich. "It's not how much you do, it's how you do it. He maintains the tempo of his swing...and might have the best legwork in the country." Took NCAA Division I pommel horse crowns (1978-79) and placed fourth as frosh (1976). Three-time NACGC All-America (1975-76, 1977-78, 1978-79). Three-peat NCAA Regional kingpin (1976-78). Finalist for prestigious NCAA "Today's Top Five Award" with Greg Kelser (Michigan State), Jim Spanarkel (Duke), etc., as senior. Nominated for Nissen Award the Heisman Trophy of men's gymnastics (1978-79). Won titles at Midwest, Windy City, and Rocky Mountain open meets. Earned 10.0 at Midwest Open (1978-79). Posted 44 first-place finishes in 54 career meetsÑ21 wins in last 22 competitions. Four-time team MVP and three-year captain. Niles East All-Stater (1975).
