Spectacular multi-sport athlete. Named on NIU All-Century cage and All-Decade grid units. Earned 13 letters in three sports. Nicknamed "Flip" for then radical one-handed basketball jump shot. Known to make football catches "right out of the blue" and "right out of opponent's hands," according to student newspaper. Started at end on unbeaten Little 19 Conference champs in football and made AP Second-Team All-Little 19 as senior (1938). Lettered on Huskie grid units that combined for 20-7-6 won-lost-tied record (1935-38). Competed in pole vault, discus, long jump, and javelin on strong Huskie track and field squad that won team crowns in State Teachers College, Elmhurst College Invitational, and Little 19 meets (1939). Set six records in final spring (1) school pole vault (12-6) standard, (2) NIU and (3) Glidden Field discus marks, (4) State Teachers College meet pole vault (12-1) and (5) discus (141-3) standards, and (6) Elmhurst Invitational discus (140-3) mark. Won Little 19 discus title, placed in three other events, and contributed 12.5 points in league meet despite bruised heal (1939). Finished No. 3 in team track points with 98 5/6 behind Hall of Famers Chet Davis (113 1/4) and Bill Terwilliger (101 3/4) as senior. Tallied 10 points and placed in three events at Little 19 Conference track meet as junior. Wound up No. 3 in basketball scoring as frosh (54 points). Won Graduating Senior Athletic Award (1938-39). Three-sport starter at Mount Morris High. U. S. Army Air Corps vet (1942-46). Placed third in discus at National Senior Olympics (1987) (Deceased).
