An NIU record holder in five different events, Mick Coyne set Huskie individual swimming records in the 200-yard backstroke, posting a time of 1:48.76 during his junior season and the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:54.96 during his junior year. Coyne was also a part of three NIU relay records, setting school-best marks in the 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay and 800-yard freestyle relay. The 400 medley relay team of Coyne, Leon Weed, Dario Fuentes and Dan Cornelius posted a time of 3:23.74 in 2001, the 200 freestyle relay was made up of Chris Kamp, Coyne, Peter Cabo and Fuentes, and posted a mark of 1:23.25 in 2001 while the 800-yard freestyle relay quartet was Tim Griffin, Coyne, Jon Worcester and Peter Cabo with a time of 6:45.22 in 1999.Â
Coyne was an All-MAC performer during all four of his seasons in DeKalb and was named the co-MAC Swimmer of the Year in 2000, along with Miami’s John Carroll. At the MAC Championship that season, Coyne posted a time of 1:50.05 in winning the 200 individual medley and also won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:48.76. At the 2001 MAC Championships, Coyne posted top-five finishes in three events, the 200 and 400 individual medley as well as the 200 backstroke.Â
Coyne competed in the Australian Olympic Trials in 2000, finishing in the top-10 in both the 200-meter individual medley and the 400-meter individual medley.
