(Charter Member). Symbol of achievement. Molded generations of student-athletes as patriarch of Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Athletics and longest tenured AD (1929-68). Enshrined into Helms Athletic Foundation Football Hall of Fame (1972). Initiated plan for NCAA University Division status, made original overtures to MAC, and upgraded schedules. Expanded program from four sports (football, basketball, baseball, and track in 1929) to 11, plus nurtured an extensive intramural program and well-respected physical education curriculum. Revamped facilities from east campus Glidden Field-Still Gym area to 60-acre west campus complex that included Huskie Stadium, Evans Field House, McKinzie Field, an all-weather outdoor track, 12 tennis courts, plus practice and I-M fields. Provided impetus for NIU Athletics HOF (1968). Honored on 75th NIU anniversary with field house rededication in his name (1974). Served as head coach in football (132-70-20 won-lost-tied record in 1929-54), basketball (125-93 in 1929-40), baseball (126-125 in 1930-34, 1936-44, 1946-47), and golf (26-20-3 in 1940-46). Led NIU to 12 league titles?six in football (1935, 1938, 1941, 1944, 1946, 1951), two in basketball (1932-33, 1933-34), three in golf (1941, 1943, 1946), and one in baseball (1946). Chaired committee that originated "Huskie" nickname and mascot (1940). Coached at Boone (IA) High (1924-27) and DeKalb High (1928). El Paso (IL) native. Galesburg High grad. Illinois transfer. Won 11 letters and captained four sports at Des Moines (IA) University (Deceased).
