Known as Northern Illinois' "Mr. Dash." Considered the elite sprinter in modern Huskie history. Competed with nation's best sprinters?such as Cyril Pinder (Illinois), Stan Gay (Purdue), Charlie Green (Nebraska), and O. J. Simpson (Southern Cal)?in NIU's early days at Division I level. Participated in three NCAA Championships?College Division outdoor (1966), plus University Division outdoor (1967) and indoor (1968) meets. Missed qualifying for NCAA semis in 100-yard dash by one place as junior. Won 17 firsts, named team MVP, and earned Ed Behan Memorial Trophy with team-leading 117 1/2 points in 12 meets as soph in initial varsity campaign (1965-66). Made college debut by winning 300-yard dash (:31.5) and finishing second to Pinder in 60 (:06.3) at Illinois Federation Meet (February 26, 1966). Set NIU records in 100 (:09.7), 220 (:21.3), and 300 (:31.5), plus aided 440 and 880-yard relay team standards (1966). Ruled 220 (:21.3), placed second in 100 (:09.8), plus anchored second-place 440-yard and third-place mile relay units in 1966 IIAC finals. Participated in 220, 440, and 440 relay at NCAA (1966). Swept indoor 60-yard dash vs. Illinois and Ohio State (1967). Won 100 and 200 in triangular vs. Wisconsin and Nebraska?beating Green with school-record and NCAA-qualifying :09.5 (April 22, 1967). Posted five double wins in 100 and 220 (1967). Voted team MVP for second time and captain as senior. Set NIU 60-yard dash mark (:06.2 vs. Ohio State and Purdue) and made NCAA indoor meet (1968). Rockton Hononegah High star.
