Pioneer Northern Illinois three-sport regular and four-decade area coach / educator. Namesake of long-running, traditiion-rich Sycamore High School boys' basketball holiday tournament. Received strong support on NIU's All-Century Team balloting in both football and basketball. Selected on Northern Illinois All-Decade Team (1920s) at halfback during program's gridiron Centennial (1999). Garnered 20 of 29 possible votes on Huskie All-Century Team at guard on hardwood (2000-01). Earned 10 total varsity "NI" monograms in football (4), basketball (4), and baseball (2). Selected Northern Illinois team captain in both football (1929) and basketball (1930-31). Identified by The Norther yearbook as pillar of athletics at NIU. "His election as captain is sufficient tribute to the esteem in which `Scummy' was held by his teammates as well as the fans," noted the publication. In describing his basketball acumen, The Norther wrote: "(He was) the master wheel in the NI attack and the keystone of the Prof defense." Served as Hall of Fame head coach George "Chick" Evans' first football team captain and contributed at HB and LB on 6-1-1 Huskie eleven as junior (1929). Served as first baseman in baseball. Elected president of school's Varsity Club?whose membership was limited to NIU's letter-winners?and was instrumental in early success and growth of state's oldest prep holiday basketball tourney (DeKalb Holiday Tournament) which originated on campus. Taught and coached for 34 years at Sycamore High. Sycamore product (Deceased).
